Police in Nuevo Leon state, where Monterrey is located, are trying to determine if the car was loaded with explosives or if assailants threw grenades at it, said a military official who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation

MEXICO CITY – A car exploded Thursday in the northern city of Monterrey as a military convoy chasing a suspicious vehicle was passing it. No one was injured, authorities said.

Police in Nuevo Leon state, where Monterrey is located, are trying to determine if the car was loaded with explosives or if assailants threw grenades at it, said a military official who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation.

Photographs of the scene showed an almost-disintegrated small car and the damaged metal door of an auto repair shop. The explosion caused no other reported damage.

The troops were on a routine patrol in Monterrey when they spotted a suspicious car carrying several men and gave chase.

The industrial city of Monterrey has seen a spike in drug violence since early 2010, when the Gulf drug cartel and the Zetas began a fierce fight for control of the city and its metropolitan area.

Drug traffickers first used explosives against authorities in July 2010, when a car bomb aimed at federal police officers exploded in Ciudad Juarez, killing three and wounding nine. The following months, three other car bombs were detonated in Ciudad Victoria, capital of the border state of Tamaulipas.

Also Thursday, a federal judge sentenced four military officers to more than 29 years in prison for giving drug traffickers information on police operations, the Attorney General’s Office said in a statement.

The four soldiers, three lieutenants and a captain were arrested in June 2009 as part of a widespread corruption probe known as “Operation Clean House.”

The officers were linked to drug lords Ismael Zambada and the Beltran Leyva brothers, the statement said.

They were giving them “information that allowed them to evade justice and operate with impunity.”

The military officers are Capt. Jose Manuel Reyes, and Lts. Ricardo Santos Vazquez, Jaime Guatemala Nino and Francisco Jimenez Garcia. Each received a sentence of 29 years, four months and 15 days in prison, federal prosecutors said.

They also have to pay fines ranging from $13,600 to $122,000.

Federal prosecutors didn’t say where the officers were working while allegedly collaborating with drug traffickers or how long they allegedly passed information to them.

Zambada is one of the leaders of the Sinaloa drug cartel, Mexico’s most powerful. The Beltran Leyva brothers were once part of the same cartel but they split after the 2008 arrest of Alfredo Beltran Leyva.

Navy sailors and customs agents also found 24 metric tons of precursor 부산중구출장샵 chemicals in two containers when inspecting a ship in the Pacific seaport of Manzanillo coming from Busan, South Korea. The containers were from Shanghai, said a Thursday statement by the Mexican navy.

Mexican authorities have made major busts of large labs with such chemicals and meth this year, signaling an expansion of methamphetamine production possibly by the Sinaloa drug cartel, the country’s most powerful.

Mexico is the primary source of meth to the United States and most of Mexico’s precursor chemicals come from Asia.

Meanwhile, the rapper himself reported to a federal prison in Arkansas Monday, to begin serve an 11-month sentence for violating his probation on weapons charges.

Cottle was arrested Sept. 1 along with her husband during a traffic stop on Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip.

The 35-year-old is not required to appear in person on the case. It will be called for a pretrial hearing on Jan. 6.

Cottle’s attorney, Blair Berk, 부산중구출장샵 declined to comment.

Prosecutors declined to charge T.I., citing a federal judge’s decision to send him to prison for 11 months and because only four ecstasy pills were found on him.

BEIJING – A toddler who was twice run over by vans and then ignored by passers-by on a busy market street died Friday a week after the accident and after days of bitter soul-searching over declining morality in China.

The Guangzhou Military District General Hospital said that the 2-year-old girl, Wang Yue, died shortly after midnight of brain and organ failure. “Her injuries were too severe and the treatment had no effect,” intensive care unit director Su Lei told reporters.

The plight of the child, nicknamed Yueyue, 부산중구출장샵 came to symbolize what many Chinese see as a decay in public morals after heady decades of economic growth and rising prosperity.

After toddler is left to die, China disquieted

Gruesome closed-circuit camera video of last Thursday’s accident, aired on television and posted on the Internet, showed Yueyue toddling along the hardware market street in the southern city of Foshan. A van strikes her, slows and then resumes driving, rolling its back right wheel over the child. As she lays with blood pooling, 18 people walk or cycle by and another van strikes her before a scrap picker scoops her up.

Yueyue’s death touched off another round of hand-wringing about society and personal responsibility. Many comments posted to social media sites said “we are all passers-by.”

Li Xiangping, a professor of religion at Huadong University, said on a Twitter-like service that it is too easy to blame others. “What after all prompted such a sad phenomenon? Officials? The rich? Or is it our own cold-heartedness?” Li said on Sina Corp.’s Weibo.

Police have detained the drivers of both vans on suspicion of causing a traffic accident but have not said what formal charges they would face and if manslaughter would be among them now that the girl has died.

The people who could be seen on the video passing by the injured Yueyue have recounted being harassed for ignoring her. The respected Southern Metropolis Daily newspaper quoted a man it identified only as a hardware merchant Mr. Chen as saying that he had been receiving crank calls ever since someone picked him out as the 16th passer-by. He said he hadn’t noticed the child.

Some experts said an unwillingness to help others is an outgrowth of urbanization as migrants pour into cities and create neighborhoods of strangers.

“Rapid urbanization not only affects China or Foshan, but anywhere in the world where you have a lot of high-rise buildings, where there is high population density, then the relationship with the neighbors, and with each other is affected,” said Yao Yue, a psychologist and director of telephone help-line for distressed people in Beijing.

Anci, a villager from near the quake epicenter, said he and his family spent the night in a makeshift tent, worried that aftershocks could cause more buildings to collapse

SEMBALUN, Indonesia — Hundreds of tourists stranded on Mount Rinjani on the Indonesian island of Lombok by an earthquake that killed 16 people and triggered landslides are making their way off the mountain, shaken by their experience but mostly unharmed, an official said Monday. By late afternoon, more than 250 people had reached a relief post in Sembalun village and a team of rescuers has reached hundreds more near the mountain’s crater lake, a local military official, Arifianto, told Indonesian TV.

He said some suffered light injuries and were traumatized, but most were in good condition.

The magnitude 6.4 earthquake early Sunday killed 16 people, including an Indonesian student who was among the Mount Rinjani climbers. The shallow quake set off landslides on the mountain that’s carpeted in boulders and 부산중구출장샵 rocks, blocking usual paths out.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency had said more than 680 people were stranded on Rinjani, an active volcano, based on figures from its entry gates where visitors are registered. Most are foreign — from 26 countries, including more than 330 from Thailand.

Arifianto, who uses one name, said rescuers will escort trekkers down the mountain. Indonesian’s elite special forces have also been deployed to speed up the evacuation.

The shallow quake damaged more than 1,400 houses and was felt on neighboring Bali island, where no damage or casualties were reported.

Indonesia’s meteorology and geophysics agency has recorded more than 270 aftershocks.

Anci, a villager from near the quake epicenter, said he and his family spent the night in a makeshift tent, worried that aftershocks could cause more buildings to collapse.

“We slept here at the roadside because our house collapsed in the quake,” he said. “There have been many aftershocks, although they are not strong so far. But we heard that quakes as strong as the one early in the morning may occur and that makes my family and I very nervous and scared.”

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said the government would give each family whose home was destroyed 50 million rupiah ($3,500) to rebuild.

Like Bali, Lombok is known for pristine beaches and mountains. Hotels and other buildings in both locations are not allowed to exceed the height of coconut trees.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes due to its location on the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Ocean. In December 2004, a massive magnitude 9.1 earthquake off Sumatra triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries.

Tavarez died Monday afternoon at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park, on Long Island, said Katharina Harf, co-founder of the bone marrow donor center DKMS.

Adriana Douzos, a spokeswoman for the long-running, Tony winning show, also confirmed the death but declined further comment.

Tavarez, who played the young lion Nala, had received an umbilical-cord blood transplant in August. The procedure was performed as an alternative to a bone marrow transplant. Her doctor, Dr. Larry Wolfe, said that a perfect bone marrow match for Shannon could not be found.

The search for a match was especially daunting because Shannon’s mother is African-American and her father is Hispanic, from the Dominican Republic. For bone marrow transplants, minorities and those of mixed ancestry have a more difficult time finding good matches because there aren’t as many people from those groups signed up as potential donors. Right now, 83 percent of African-American patients who need marrow transplants don’t find matches after six months of searching, according to the National Marrow Donor Program, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping patients receive transplants.

Tavarez was forced to quit the show in April. She beat out hundreds of other hopefuls last year to earn her spot playing Nala, the childhood pal and girlfriend of Simba, hero of “The Lion King.” She split the role with another girl, performing four shows a week for six months.

Keys, Rihanna and 50 Cent campaigned to help Tavarez find a bone marrow donor, and cast members held bone marrow donor registration drives. Harf said the donor center registered 10,000 people as potential donors. Keys skyped with Tavarez while she was at the hospital, Harf said, and 부산중구출장샵 the singer, Rhihanna and 50 Cent urged their fans to sign up as potential donors.

Child performers from “The Lion King” and other shows also sold bracelets and key chains that read, “Shine for Shannon,” to raise money to help pay for her medical bills.

“It’s rare that you meet such a spirited girl at such a young age,” Harf said. “She touched so many people to register. She was really, really a special girl.”

“Shannon’s bright smile, amazing talent, and courage will continue to inspire us in our efforts,” the New York Blood Center said in a statement.

PHILADELPHIA — Demonstrators took to the streets outside of Philadelphia’s Criminal Justice Center Monday evening, rallying for 부산중구출장샵 imprisoned rapper Meek Mill, CBS Philadelphia reports.

The crowd — including some celebrities and athletes — is calling for Judge Genece Brinkley to recuse herself after handing down a two- to four-year prison sentence for the rapper last week.

The sentence comes in the wake of alleged probation violations, including an alleged altercation at the St. Louis airport, as well as an alleged reckless driving stop in New York.

More in Celebrities

NBA legend Julius Erving spoke to the gathering crowd Monday night.

“I’ve only met Meek Mill once but he knows my son Julius III and he knows my friend Michael Reuben and they believe in Meek. As we rally today because we all believe in him and that the punishment bestowed upon him is excessive, is cruel and it’s motivated by unsavory circumstances,” said Erving.

“So this practice of jailing people when you feel like it against the recommendation of your own constituents and in this case it was a district attorney and it was his probation officer — that’s got to stop. Recuse the judge and let justice prevail,” Erving added.

Other notable celebrities attended the rally, including Eagles players Malcolm Jenkins and Vinny Curry and rapper Rick Ross.

“In Meek’s case it wasn’t simply a miscarriage of justice, it was an abortion of justice,” said Ross. “I think the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; they need to take a second look at this bizarre sentencing.”

“We aren’t going to act like Meek Mill is an angel or that he’s perfect. He’s a man. A man who has made some mistakes and for 10 years has paid for those mistakes,” said Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcom Jenkins.

Judge Brinkley has overseen the rapper’s legal troubles for years following a 2008 drug and weapons case. His probation was previously violated in 2015. At that time Mill was ordered to house arrest.

Those rallying say Brinkley showed “extreme bias” during the rapper’s case.

Democratic state Representative Jordan Harris of South Philadelphia says the Meek Mill sentencing is systematic of a larger criminal justice issue.

“The difference because the person we’re talking about today has multi-platinum albums and has resources the cameras are watching. Had it been somebody else nobody would be paying attention.

Mill’s attorney, Brian McMonagle, tells CBS Philadelphia he’ll file paperwork Tuesday morning claiming Judge Brinkley has shown extra judicial conduct and biased.
