US finds Huawei has backdoor access to mobile networks globally, report says

Corinne Reichert/CNET Chinese tech giant Huawei can reportedly access the networks it helped build that are being used by mobile phones around the world. It’s been using backdoors intended for law enforcement for over a decade, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, citing US officials. The details were disclosed to the UK and Germany at the end of 2019 after the US had noticed access since 2009 across 4G equipment, according to the report.

The backdoors were inserted for law enforcement use into carrier equipment like base stations, antennas and switching gear, 우리카지노계열 the Journal said, with US officials reportedly alleging they were designed to be accessible by Huawei.

“We have evidence that Huawei has the capability secretly to access sensitive and personal information in systems it maintains and sells around the world,” Robert O’Brien, national security adviser, reportedly said.

Huawei denied the reports, saying it’s the US government that’s been “covertly accessing telecom networks worldwide, spying on other countries.”

“US allegations of Huawei using lawful interception are nothing but a smokescreen,” Huawei said in an emailed statement Wednesday. “Huawei has never and will never covertly access telecom networks, nor do we have the capability to do so.”

The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for 우리카지노계열 comment.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson approved Huawei for 5G last month with some conditions: The British restrictions are to exclude Huawei from building core parts of the UK’s 5G networks, 우리카지노 have Huawei’s market share capped at 35% and exclude Huawei from sensitive geographic locations. The European Union allowed higher-risk vendors for 5G with similar restrictions at the end of January.

Huawei’s 5G approval there came despite the US urging the UK to ban the Chinese telecommunications giant.

In addition, US President Donald Trump at the same time signed an executive order essentially banning the company in light of national security concerns that Huawei had close ties with the Chinese government. Huawei has repeatedly denied that charge.

The new features include sharing your ETA with a contact to keep them updated on your location and time of arrival. There’s also a new Apple-made feature called Look Around that’s akin to Google’s Street View. 

Apple Maps isn’t the only major change in iOS 13. There are plenty of new features, including a new swipe keyboard that doesn’t let you swear, that make the upgrade appealing. 

Share ETA is a convenient way to let your friends know when you’ll arrive.

This has to be one of the more useful features that Apple has added in recent memory. As of iOS 13.1, you can share your estimated time of arrival with a friend through Apple Maps, iMessage or text when you’re using Apple Maps navigation. Here’s how:

1. Start Apple Maps navigation and get turn-by-turn directions to a location. 

2. When viewing current directions, swipe up on the bottom of the area that displays your arrival time and shows the end button.

3. Tap the Share ETA button. 

4. Select the contact or contacts with whom you want to share it.

If your iPhone is running iOS 13.1 or newer, and you’re sharing your ETA with someone with an iPhone on iOS 13.1 or newer, then Apple Maps will be used to share your location, route, and ETA. However, if you share your ETA with a non-iPhone user, or someone running iOS 13 or older on their Apple device, then a message will be sent.

I started sharing my ETA with you in Apple Maps: arriving at Pepsi Center around 10:44 AM. I’ll let you know if I’m running late.

If you hit traffic or take a detour, Apple Maps will send another message letting the person know you’re running behind and the new estimated time of arrival. 

From my testing, the threshold for triggering another alert was if I would be 5 minutes late. So, in the instance above, if my new arrival time was 10:49 a.m., Apple Maps would send another message. 

The added details in the new Apple Maps make a world of difference.

Apple has also spent a lot of time scanning streets and roads across the country to produce a more detailed, better-looking map. The new-look started as a slow roll out in the US following the launch of iOS 13 in September. At the end of January, Apple announced the rollout was complete. 

If you haven’t seen the more detailed map yet, open the Maps app and look at your area. You don’t have to update your app, it’s all done automatically on Apple’s servers.   

Another notable change in Apple Maps is a new feature called Look Around. It’s similar to Google’s Street View, 우리카지노 using photos to show you exactly what a location looks like and allowing you to move around the city streets. The only downside is that it’s only available in New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Oahu, Houston and 우리카지노 Los Angeles right now. If you don’t live in one of the supported cities, that’s all right — you can still check out Look Around. Here’s how:

1. Open Apple Maps and zoom in on a city that has Look Around. I picked San Francisco when testing because it’s one of my favorite cities to visit.

2. Zoom in to a specific area, or until you see a pair of binoculars show up in the top-right corner of the map; just below the location icon and the “i” button.

3. Select the binoculars to open Look Around.

A window will pop up, with a familiar Street View-like look. Expand Look Around to full-screen mode by tapping on the double-arrow icon. 

You can swipe around in that window to change the direction of the photo, or tap on the street to move down the block (just like tapping on arrows in Street View). As you move around, you can tap on the name of a business to zoom in on the storefront and view its address, hours, phone number and website — the same stuff you see when searching for a business in Maps.

These features join the already impressive list of additions Apple made to iOS 13. From a new Reminders app, to a new method for deleting apps on your iPhone and iPad ( $363 at Walmart ) — there’s a lot to learn.

We detected no privacy leaks during our tests, and found its speeds to be reliably fast. 

The company’s 1-year subscription plan costs is for $6.99/month ($83.88 billed at once). While that yearly price is lower than most other contenders, the month-to-month price of $11.95 is at the high end of the spectrum. As of September 16, 2019, the company’s other pricing tiers have crept up a bit: It’s now $3.49/month for a 3-year plan (or $125.64 total), up from $2.99/$107.55. While Surfshark’s network is smaller than some, they make it up on features. Let’s start off with the biggest win they offer: unlimited device support. If you want to run your entire home or office on Surfshark’s VPN, you don’t have to worry about how many devices you have on or connected. They also offer anti-malware, ad blocking and tracker blocking as part of their software.

Surfshark received generally high marks when its Chrome and Firefox extensions were audited for privacy by German security firm Pure53 (PDF link of full report) — though that audit was commissioned by Surfshark.

Doing any of these three things could be illegal in your country and could result in very severe penalties.

Be careful, because it looks like that will jump to $143.40 after your first year is up. Month-by-month plans are $11.95. Our one disappointment is that their refund policy is 7-days instead of 30, but you can certainly get a feel for their excellent performance in the space of a week.

HotSpot Shield is a product that has had some ups and downs in terms of our editorial coverage. Finally, just this year, ZDNet uncovered a flaw in the company’s software that exposed users. Fortunately, that was fixed immediately.

As VPN services go, Webroot WiFi Security is relatively bare-bones — but it’s also cheap. Starting at $39.99 for a year of VPN service, you can get a bundle with both VPN and Webroot’s antivirus software for $69.98 for your first year. Unfortunately, both of these prices bump up after the first year. VPN protection jumps to $59.99 and the bundle jumps to $119.98.

While we applaud the combination of VPN and antivirus in one package, Webroot has had a troubled few years. In 2017, it mistakenly flagged Windows’ system files as malicious. In 2018, a kernel exploit was found in the company’s Mac antivirus client. In 2019, the company was acquired by backup firm Carbonite.

If you’re only protecting a few devices and want to save money, Webroot’s VPN might be for you. That $39.99 price is for up to three devices. If you want to protect five devices, you’ll need to pay $59.99 for a year and $79.99 after that. Frankly, once you enter that price range, there are products with more capabilities available.

Webroot’s VPN is also light on protocols. While they do connect using IKEv2 by default, they also offer L2TP and the very old and very insecure PPTP protocol (although they do warn that it’s not “as” secure. Another concern for those of you who need deep protection is that the company does log both which VPN server location you connect to and the country you connect from.

So who is Webroot’s VPN for?
